Building new skills

The Pre-Apprenticeship Home Renovation Training Program provides individuals with the hands-on skills training required to find employment in the residential renovation and construction trades (including carpentry, drywall finishing and plastering, tile setting, and painting). There is no cost to participate.

  • 18 weeks of technical training in home renovation including exterior sheathing, framing, and installation of subfloor, windows, doors, trim and siding.
  • 8 to 12 weeks of paid work placement.
  • Technical, academic, and pre-employment preparation.
  • Textbooks, toolkits, and safety equipment.
  • Training including: First Aid & CPR-C, Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS), Working at Heights, Worker Health and Safety Awareness in 4 Steps.
  • Entrepreneurship and financial literacy training.
  • Workshops by Schluter Systems and Sherwin Williams.
  • Access to Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR) portfolio review (where applicable).
  • The opportunity to earn high school credits towards your Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD).

Participants must be:

  • At least 16 years of age. (Participants under 18 years old must have an Ontario Secondary School Diploma or equivalent.)
  • A Canadian Citizen, Permanent Resident, Convention Refugee with open work permit, or Newcomer with an Authorization for Emergency Travel document and a valid work permit. (Temporary residents, asylum seekers, and refugees must confirm with the government what permits are required.)
  • Legally entitled to study and work in Canada.
  • A resident of Ontario.
  • Proficient in English (Canadian Language Benchmark Level 5 or higher).
  • Committed to attend classes on a full-time basis for 18 weeks and work in the field following training.

Only those selected for an interview will be contacted and invited to attend a virtual information session prior to the next session beginning.
